Finding the right church
Now that you’ve accepted Christ and are looking for a place to worship here are a few things you should know about “church”. There are many different kinds of churches with many different kinds of music, focus, vision, people, etc to choose from. The thing you need to figure out is where you fit in. We worship a creative God and he has made us all unique and different from one another. We have special DNA that makes up who we are as people, and the same can be said of churches. Some are quiet and peaceful in their worship. Some are loud and outrageous – full of people dancing and singing. Some appeal to different cultures and languages; English, Spanish, Russian, Korean and some are focused at Young Professionals or Families. Some churches are young and vibrant, others are older and established. But even with all of our diversity – we are all one church body.
As long as a church declares Jesus Christ as the Savior of the World, we are brothers.
Prayer
Prayer is the key to your quest for a church home. When you visit a church you should enter it prayerfully and ask God to guide you in your selection. Here’s how that will probably happen. You will go and feel like you belong there. You’ll enjoy the music. You’ll receive something during the sermon that will help you become a better Christian and servant of the Lord. The people there will be warm and open to strangers (you) and welcome you to their church. The vision and work that the church does will appeal to you and inspire you to want to work in that ministry and live for Christ.
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths”. Proverbs 3:6
The Bible
The church you’re seeking should preach from the Holy Bible. If they are not Bible preaching, they are not sharing truth. Did you know the Bible is the all time best seller from the beginning of time? Selling 6 Billion copies worldwide, the #2 best seller is “Quotations from Chairman Mao” also known as “The Little Red Book” trailing from very far behind with 900 million. There are many versions of the Bible. At Faith Heritage, Pastor Salomon usually preaches out of the New International Version (NIV) for understanding – it’s very simple in it’s breakdown or sometimes he preaches out of the King James Version (KJV) for beauty and poetic value – the first translation to the English language. It uses old English with the “Thys and Thous”.
There are Bibles geared to Children, Youth, Women. The Message Bible reads like a novel. The Amplified Bible is “louder” and gives word breakdowns or synonyms on words kind of like a Thesaurus. Nowadays, there’s a Bible that could be understood by everyone.
Worship / Music
At Faith Heritage Church, our music is loud. We’re sorry, if you’ll be discontinuing reading at this point, but we would be lying if we said our services were quiet and mellow. The main genre of music played at our church is “Gospel”…mostly two kinds of Gospel – Contemporary Gospel and Black Gospel. If you’re interested in knowing what that kind of music sounds like, you could search artists like Israel Houghton, Kirk Franklin, Byron Cage, Hezekiah Walker, Donnie McClurkin, Martha Munizzi, and Andrae Crouch…just to name a few. However, the majority of churches in this area play music from a very popular church in Australia called “Hillsong” which has a more contemporary Christian sound.
Children / Youth ministries
If you have kids, this will be an area of interest for you. When searching for a church, you should get the feedback of your children to understand what their experience was and what was appealing about the church to them. Many churches have Children’s Church, where the kids are escorted out of the sanctuary/auditorium during the Pastor’s Message so that they can have a message tailored to their ages. They also have a lot of fun with songs, games, crafts, and some churches give out snacks or treats. This is a great feature for parents because it allows you to focus on what the Pastor is preaching and not have to worry about your children. If your kids like it, you’ll hear about it. If they didn’t, you’ll hear about it.
