We’ve had a busy summer, especially the last two months. We’ve had birthday celebrations, 14 hour long Vacation Bible Schools, Da-cations at Jetty Island with sand, sun, fun and games, the Nubian Jam, and an all-out Block Party that took every ounce of strength and ingenuity from everyone doing everything at all times. And that was just July! I don’t know about you, but I was EX-HAUS-TED!

I love those moments of sudden illumination, don’t you? - Those instant flashes of deeper understanding that just seem to come out of nowhere? You can be reading something you have read over and over again, perhaps for years, but suddenly you see something there you’ve never seen before and it’s like a light bulb goes on and you get it.

We are all called by God into ministry, whether we think we are worthy or not, whether we think we have anything to offer or not, whether we think we’re ready or not.

I believe that when God created us, He placed within each of our vessels a variety of gifts, callings and possibilities and watched to see how we use them. There are those among us who seem to be able to pick up an oddly shaped box with a complexity of strings attached, and somehow manipulate its components

“For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” -John 3:16

I’ve heard this verse over and over for years, as I’m sure you have as well. But during a recent Bible Study, I was struck by the word begotten. It means to be sired or to be born of the father’s seed. In essence, it means Jesus was flesh of God’s flesh...

I was 19, a freshman in college, with a 5 year old sister, and 9 and 11 year old brothers. I had been burping babies, changing diapers, making formula, potty-training, playing peek-a-boo and carrying kids around on my hip since I was 7 years old. I was tired and didn’t want any more children in my life. Yet here I was, standing across the room from my mother and my “Baby-daddy” , listening to him say how he didn’t want to have to be responsible, just wanted to do what he wanted to do and that’s all. He didn’t feel...

It shot me wide awake Monday morning, a voice inside my head loud and clear yelling “Your Liberty comes in knowing who you are!” And I saw that pivotal scene from the end of The Matrix where Neo is fighting the Agents. They’ve already beat him until they thought he was dead, and he thought he was, too. But Trinity quietly whispered words of life into his ear...

I don’t like pain. I don’t think any normal person does, either. But during this time of celebrating the resurrection of Christ, I began to think about His suffering and sacrifice for our sins. I know we say He was “Fully God and Fully Man” and we think the God-part superseded the Man-part and enabled Him to do everything else with ease.

Jesus knew his time was short. He said so in John 16 when he’s telling his disciples “But now I go my way to him that sent me…” Many things Jesus does with his remaining hours don’t reflect what I (and probably you) would do with...

I sat in my car the other day and watched as 45 mile an hour winds blew around loose debris, overturned garbage cans, shook cars, buildings, and power lines, ripped off dead tree branches, and generally made a mess of the Puget Sound. Just off to my left was a pretty good sized magnolia
